A note from the creator

I created the Catch a Rainbow app because rainbows are uncommon, beautiful signs that can change the feeling of an ordinary day. As an art and digital media teacher, I spend a lot of time thinking about how creativity, science, and technology can work together. This app grew out of that mix. I work on it when I am not teaching, especially during the summer and on weekends. I welcome thoughtful questions, bug reports, and ideas that can make the app better. Please keep messages kind and constructive.

Common questions

Why does the app ask for location?
The app uses location to estimate local rainbow conditions, calculate sun and weather factors, and show relevant nearby information. Locations shown on the map are general and do not show an exact photo location.

Why does the app use location in the background?
If enabled, location helps keep rainbow alerts relevant even when the app is not open. Rainbow opportunities can be brief, so alerts work best when they are based on the user’s general current area.

Why are rainbow predictions not guaranteed?
Rainbows depend on sunlight, rain, viewing angle, clouds, visibility, and timing. The app can estimate possible conditions, but nature gets the final vote.

Can I delete a photo I uploaded?
Yes. Users can delete their own uploaded photos in the app. If you would rather keep a photo but not show it publicly, you can also make it private.

How does Catch a Rainbow help keep the app safe?
Safeguards have been added to help keep the app safe, including account based upload tools, photo visibility options, general map locations for privacy, duplicate checks, moderation tools, and ways to review or remove uploaded content.

How do I report a problem?
Email a short description of the issue, the device you are using, and what you were trying to do when the issue happened.
